Charles (John Heard) is just an ordinary guy...surrounded by extraordinary people. First, there’s his unhinged mother Clara (Gloria Grahame), an aging vamp who is often found in the bathtub. Second, there’s Sam (Peter Riegert), Charles’ unemployed, womanizing roommate. Third and fourth are Charles’ starved-for-love secretary Betty (Nora Heflin) and his neurotic boss (Jerry Hardin) who wants Charles to untangle his son’s sexual issues. Finally, there’s Laura (Mary Beth Hurt) – pretty, funny, a terrific cook, a great lover...in short, the perfect soul mate for Charles. They’ve dated, they’ve even lived together. Unfortunately, she’s still married. And when Laura ultimately returns to her husband, Charles is determined to change her mind, aided, abetted – and occasionally hindered – by his assortment of eccentric friends and family. Written and directed by Joan Micklin Silver, this adaptation of Ann Beattie's novel also stars Kenneth McMillan, Mark Metcalf and Griffin Dunne.
