Nick Robey (John Garfield) is a dim-witted thug who leads a dead-end life, living with his abusive, alcoholic mother and scraping by on petty crime. When a friend pushes him into carrying out a big-time payroll robbery, the whole affair turns into a catastrophe. A cop is critically wounded, and Nick just barely gets away. To avoid the manhunt that ensues, he decides to hide out at a public swimming pool, where he goes for a swim and meets the shy and lonely Peggy Dobbs (Shelley Winters). Nick charms Peggy and gains her trust by teaching her to swim and, in turn, she invites him home to meet her family. But once in the house, the panicked thief reveals his true identity and holds Peg’s horrified family hostage until he can figure out what to do next. He needs to skip town, and Peg agrees to help as she has fallen hopelessly for him...or has she?
