About this movie
Based on a novel by Anne Rivers Siddons, “Heart of Dixie” is a stirring coming-of-age tale set in the turbulent 1950s, when the old South collided with the new. Starring Ally Sheedy, Virginia Madsen, Phoebe Cates and Treat Williams, this film is an unflinching look at race relations during our nation’s adolescence. Sheedy stars as Maggie, a senior at Alabama’s Randolph University, who questions the fabric of Southern life after coming face to face with segregation and bigotry. Though her best friend (Madsen) tries to keep her on the path of a true Southern belle, a fellow student (Cates) and a news photographer (Williams) show her that she can no longer ignore the Civil Rights movement that is beginning to unfurl violently around her. Filled with sights and sounds of the era, “Heart of Dixie” is shockingly real and emotionally shattering.
