Lucas Marsh (Robert Mitchum) has one burning, passionate desire in life...to be a successful doctor. But his obsession with perfection has turned him into a demanding idealist. To him, anyone who deals in human life must be infallible. As Lucas completes his training and sets up practice in a small town, his ruthless ambition and relentless perfectionism continue to alienate the people closest to him...including his long-suffering wife who supported him through medical school. But when he makes a fatal mistake in the operating room, Lucas is forced to decide who serves the patient best: an unerring machine, or a human being doing the best job he can?
