In 1765, a young girl in Arkham, Massachusetts is seen wandering off toward the mysterious mansion of Joseph Curwen (Vincent Price) and is later found in a strange trance. The enraged villagers storm the estate and, as he curses all of them and their descendants, they burn Curwen alive. Now, more than a century later, Curwen's great-great-grandson, Charles Dexter Ward (Vincent Price, in a dual role), has inherited the palace and arrives in Arkham with his wife Anne (Debra Paget). Fearing that Ward will seek the long-dreaded revenge of Joseph Curwen, the villagers are terrified and unwelcoming. But encouraged to stay by the caretaker Simon (Lon Chaney, Jr.), Ward and his wife move in to the cold, moody mansion. As Ward becomes increasingly fascinated with a portrait of his ancestor and his own uncanny likeness, he begins to change as if he's being possessed by Curwen. What evil lives within the walls of "The Haunted Palace," and what does it have in store for those who dwell there?
